Added value of the OM5 technology
The OM5 technology offers numerous improvements over previous goods classes. Present multimode fibers are optimized for an optical window or rather a wavelength range of 850 nm. Outside of this window, the signals are being dampened, so that Ethernet signals have to be transmitted over multiple multimode fibers which are connected in parallel. 10 gigabit-ready ethernet, for example, requires two fibers (one fiber to transmit, one to receive). Fot40 or rather 100 gigabit-ready ethernet applications the signals have to be split over eight fibers (2x four fibers with 10 or rather 25 gigabits /s) or 20 fibers (2x ten fibers with 10 gigabits/s).
The OM5 technology therefore uses a broadband optimized multimode fiber (wideband multimode fiber - WBMMF). In connection with the SWDM-technology (short wave division multiplexing) a wider optical window can be used. Four different wavelengths from 850 nm up to 950 nm can therefore be used. Every single wavelength is able to work with 25 gigabit/s. Hence, the quantity of fibers is being reduced quadruple in comparison to OM4. Simpler and cost efficient LWL Duplex plugs can be used instead of complex multifiber plugs (e.g. MPO-plug).

Compatibility
